Friends of the Noorderkerk

For almost 110 years, the Noorderkerk is present in the Duinoord quarter in the Schuytstraat. The church takes a modest place, adjacent to the other buildings. But from various places the distinctive tower is visible.

The church designed by architect J.C. Wentink belongs to the quater. Not for nothing, the building in 1985 was pointed as a municipal monument. The rich history, the beautiful acoustics, the romantic organ, all reasons to maintain the Noorderkerk.

In the spring of 1998 the “Friends of the Noorderkerk” was founded. In its objective is the promotion and preservation of the Noorderkerk in the Schuytstraat and the Christian community based in the church.

Become a friend You can become a friend of the Noorderkerk through annual minimum of € 20.00 donation to account number NL30INGB0007998973. Smaller donations are also welcome. The aim is to annually organize an activity or event where for you as a friend something special is arranged!

Mission

What we stand for:

The community of the Noorderkerk is a Christian Protestant church.
In keeping with the protestant tradition, we approach the questions and challenges of our time with open ears and eyes from a standpoint of generosity and cheerfulness.

The Bible is the source and basis of our Faith.
Every Sunday we come together as a community to celebrate our faith and seek inspiration, in which the Bible plays a central role.
Two basic principles of our community are love for God and for others.

Vision

Vision

Our goal:

• We want to be a spiritual home for our close-knit group of church members and new members.
• We want to create time and space for personal faith experience and growth.
• We want to create an atmosphere that encourages personal contact.
• We want to be a community that thrives and grows, where parishioners (from young to old, from more to less involved) feel connected to the church community and are inspired and motivated to share their talents and gifts with the community.
• We want to be a missionary congregation with an eye for each other and the city and region in which we live / are located.
• We want to be a positive voice in our community, promoting sustainability and fairness through our words and our deeds, where possible, in our district, the city, our country and the world.
• We want to build and maintain contacts with other Christian communities and religious organizations.

How we work

The Proper organ
An organ consists of a large number of pipes, each with a single tone, through which air is blown.
Since the invention, the stops are controlled via keys with rods. The stops send the air to some pipes. (The organ then is called mechanical pneumatic.) For sure such a large organ is heavy to play on.
In the late 19th century the purely pneumatic organ was developed. In this organ, the compounds are established by air pressure.

In 1907, the company Proper of the city Kampen built a purely pneumatic organ for the Noorderkerk. This largest organ of Jan Proper time consisted of 21 votes. The console was placed on the left side at the organ gallery. The small organ case on the front side, also called chair organ, is only for decoration. In 1938 the organ was restored and extended by the firm G. van Leeuwen & Zn .. The console moved from the left side of the organ, to the back positive, below the organ case. In the released space new pipes were placed for the expansion. Now the organ had 28 votes. In 1953 the company Valckx & Van Kouteren implemented a significant change. Some registers classified as a little too romantic were replaced by a pair of bright and sharper voices. Nevertheless, the organ remains a warm and romantic sound. A church member with a warm heart for the organ donated half of the costs.

How we work

Our community is made up of members who feel inspired by Jesus Christ, and contribute to our community by sharing their own gifts and talents.
The Noorderkerk is used as a gathering place for our services and as a base for many activities, both within the church as well as in the community. All of the work and activities related to the Noorderkerk are organized by voluntary member-task forces, rather than being run by church boards.

Main tasks:
Pastoral Vicar (0,33 fte) joined by pastoral workers.
Diaconal council.
Church stewards (Financial, Maintenance building).

Together with the Christ Triumphant Church (Christus Triumfatorkerk) and the Peace Christ Church (Pax Christikerk) we form one PKN (Protestant Church in The Netherlands) congregation with a combined membership administration and accounting.
The vision of the overarching church board is to keep the three communities open and functional.
Each church has its own financial plan.
